International Tax Assistance Program - Frequently Asked QuestionsDo I have to file tax paperwork?Yes!! Every international student in the United States is required to file tax paperwork, even if they have Can I use another software program to help me with my tax paperwork? The free GLACIER Tax Prep software provided by ISL is the only tax software program that non-resident international students should use. Other programs are not as advanced and may give you incorrect paperwork. The GLACIER Tax Prep software is telling me I am a resident for tax purposes. What do I do?You will need to file resident forms. Unfortunately, ISL cannot assist students who need to file resident tax forms. Resident tax forms are available online or at local libraries. There also are free online tax software programs at the federal IRS website for resident tax issues. Please contact ISL for a list of local resources. Who will help me with my taxes at the workshops?A trained, VITA-certified tax volunteer will assist you once you have completed your GLACIER Tax Prep paperwork. Why are my taxes different than someone else’s?Most international students will file non-resident tax forms, and most U.S. students will file resident tax forms. Non-resident tax forms are different. Only tax preparers who are specifically trained and certified in non-resident tax preparation are appropriate for you to use. Also, every country has unique treaty laws, which is why you should never copy a friend’s tax paperwork. Who do I contact for help? Please read over this entire brochure first. Contact ISL if you have questions. Send all emails regarding taxes from your UGA email account.
NOTE: Filing federal income tax forms is the personal responsibility of each international
