Dear UGA International Students and Scholars:
Welcome to Tax Season 2014! We are excited to assist you in filing your 2013 tax paperwork.
All international students should be receiving a brochure in mid-February with detailed information on the tax filing process. Please note that all international students must file tax paperwork, even those that have not worked.
The International Tax Assistance Program offers free tax preparation and filing advice for UGA international students on non-resident tax issues.
International Student Life (ISL) at the University of Georgia (UGA) has provided tax assistance since 2000. We are the only program on campus that is VITA trained by the IRS specifically for non-resident tax issues.
Who Qualifies for ISL's Tax Assistance?
BEFORE GETTING STARTED
1. All international students MUST file tax paperwork. It is required by U.S. federal law. You must file even if you did not work in 2013.
2. Do NOT copy your friend's tax paperwork even if your friend is from the same country, since every person's situation is different.
3. Non-resident dependents living with you in the U.S. must also file tax paperwork.
4. ONLY use GLACIER Tax Prep software, or seek assistance from people certified to work with non-resident tax issues.
YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM
The tax assistance program is a free service coordinated by ISL and volunteers. We ask that participants receiving help from the program are patient and understand that due to a high volume of e-mails, calls, and requests, it can take a period of time to respond to your questions. We would also like to note that in instances of complicated tax situations beyond our training, individuals may be referred to paid tax preparation services.
GLACIER Tax Prep software is provided by International Student Life with additional support from the Office of International Education. Support for tax volunteer uniforms is provided by Athens Student Housing.
