Dear UGA International Students and Scholars:
Welcome to Tax Season 2013! We are excited to assist you in filing your 2012 tax paperwork.
All international students should be receiving a brochure in mid-February with detailed
information on the tax filing process. A copy of this brochure is also available on our website,
http://isl.uga.edu. Please note that all international students must file tax paperwork, even those
that have not worked.
If you have read our brochure and have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at
isltax@uga.edu. If you would like to receive the password to the online tax software program,
GLACIER Tax Prep, please email taxpass@uga.edu from your UGA email account.
Please remember that our GLACIER Tax Prep software is the only software that you should be
using to complete your tax paperwork. Every tax issue is unique, so do not copy your friend's
paperwork, even if they are from the same country as you. This software is available to UGA
students and scholars on an F-1 or J-1 visa only. GLACIER Tax Prep software is provided by
International Student Life with additional support from the Office of International Education.
International students who worked or received income in 2012 must ALSO file a Georgia
state tax form, in addition to the federal form(s) that GLACIER Tax Prep provides for you.
If your GLACIER Tax Prep federal tax form says "1040NR-EZ" on the top left corner, ISL
can assist you at our workshops or walk-in hours. If your GLACIER Tax Prep federal tax
form says "1040NR" on the top left corner, please contact the International Student Life office
at isltax@uga.edu. In-person tax assistance for Georgia state taxes is available to F-1 or J-1
students only.
Coffee Hour Walk-In Tax Assistance for UGA international students will occur every Friday
beginning February 15 through April 5 (excluding March 15) between 11:30 AM and 1:15 PM in
the Memorial Hall Ballroom Balcony.
We will also host four additional tax assistance workshops for UGA international students:
- Monday, March 4th, 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., MLC 213
- Sunday, March 24th, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., MLC 213
- Wednesday, March 27th, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., MLC 213
- Monday, April 8th, 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., MLC 248
If you did not work or receive income in 2012, and the only form you have from GLACIER Tax
Prep is the 8843, you do not need to attend a workshop or walk-in hours. Make a copy of the
8843 for your records and mail the original to the IRS.
We look forward to assisting you this tax season!
Kind regards,
ISL Staff
NOTE: Filing federal income tax forms is the personal responsibility of each international
student and scholar. Staff members and volunteers in the ISL Office have been trained as
tax assistance volunteers through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program
(http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Free-Tax-Return-Preparation-for-You-by-Volunteers). ISL has
developed this service to help you meet your tax filing obligations. Please be aware that you are
ultimately responsible for the accuracy of your income tax returns.
