International Tax Assistance Program

The International Tax Assistance Program offers free tax preparation and filing advice for international students on non-resident tax issues.

International Student Life (ISL) at the University of Georgia (UGA) has provided tax assistance since 2000. We are the only program on campus that is VITA trained by the IRS specifically for non-resident tax issues.

Who Qualifies for ISL’s Tax Assistance?

  • UGA international students
  • UGA international scholars / researchers are eligible to use the GLACIER Tax Prep software only

Before Getting Started:

1. All international students MUST file tax paperwork. It is required by U.S. federal law. You must file even if you did not work in 2012.

2. Do NOT copy your friend’s tax paperwork even if your friend is from the same country, since every person’s situation is different.

3. Non-resident dependents living with you in the U.S. must also file tax paperwork.

4. ONLY use GLACIER Tax Prep software, or seek assistance from people certified to work with non-resident taxes.

Step One: Collect the Necessary Documents

Documents needed by everyone:

  • Passport and Visa
  • Exact dates in the U.S. in the last 6 years

If you have worked or received income in the U.S., you may receive some or all of the following documents from your employer. Check with your employer if you are unsure of what documents you have been issued.

You must use all of these documents if you receive them from your employer:

  • W-2s for the 2012 tax year
  • 1099(s) for the 2012 tax year (if applicable)
  • 1042-S for the 2012 tax year (if applicable)
  • Social Security or ITIN (individual tax I.D. number)
  • Previous year(s) form(s) if applicable

Step Two: Complete your Federal forms with GLACIER Tax Prep

GLACIER Tax Prep Software is a web-based tax return preparation system designed for international students and scholars. All international students need to enter their information into GLACIER Tax Prep, even if you haven’t worked.

GLACIER Tax Prep Software Directions

  1. Email taxpass@uga.edu from your UGA email address to get the GLACIER Tax Prep password.

  2. Visit www.glaciertax.com
  • Create your own User ID and type in the password you received from taxpass@uga.edu. Be sure to write down your user ID and password in case you forget later.
  • Fill out federal tax forms by following the directions on the GLACIER Tax Prep website.
  • Print two copies of the federal forms.
  • Students must bring the first copy of the federal forms with them to the ISL workshops/walk-in sessions, so that they can be used to assist with the Georgia state tax form (if applicable). The second copy should be sent to the IRS by April 15, 2013, using the address provided by GLACIER Tax Prep.

Step Three: Determine if you need to attend a workshop or walk-in hours

Individuals who worked or received income in 2012 must ALSO file a Georgia state tax form.
  • If your GLACIER Tax Prep federal tax form says “1040NR-EZ” on the top left corner, ISL can assist you at our workshops or walk-in hours.
  • If your GLACIER Tax Prep federal tax form says “1040NR” on the top left corner, please contact the International Student Life office for additional information.

If you did not work or receive income in 2012, and the only form you have from GLACIER Tax Prep is the 8843, you do not need to attend a workshop or walk-in hours. Make a copy of the 8843 for your records and mail the original to the IRS by April 15, 2013.

IV. Step Four: Complete Georgia state tax forms through the ISL workshops

Choors one of the following options - the same assistance is offered at both types of sessions. These sessions are open to UGA international students only.

You must have completed your Federal forms via GLACIER Tax Prep prior to attending a Coffee Hour walk-in session or a tax workshop. Please bring copies of your GLACIER Tax Prep forms with you, and bring all of the documents listed in step one (passport, W-2's, etc.)!

All sessions are first-come, first-served.
