Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) Instructions

In order to apply for an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) from the IRS, please follow these instructions!

  1. Have your W-7 reviewed during an International Tax Assistance Program workshop sponsored by International Student Life.
  2. Schedule an appointment to meet with your international student advisor in the Office of International Education (OIE): email
  3. Request a certification of status letter from your International Student Advisor in OIE during that meeting
  4. During that meeting, your advisor will review your SEVIS record. BRING THE FOLLOWING to that meeting:
    • Passport
    • Visa
    • 1-94 (card or print out)
    • I-20 or DS 2019
    • Completed and reviewed (by ISL) W-7
  5. Your advisor will complete the letter request and assist you with assembling a packet to be mailed to the IRS
  6. Mail your completed ITIN application request to the IRS at the following address:

    Internal Revenue Service
    ITIN Operation
    P.O. Box 149342
    Austin, TX 78714-9342

  7. WAIT until receiving your ITIN before filing your federal tax returns or forms.
  8. Pay any related fees if your ITIN arrives after April 15, 2014 and you must file your taxes late.
